Chondroitin sulfate improves pain and function compared to placebo in the management of knee OA
Annals of Rheumatic Diseases 2017 05
This 604 patient study demonstrated that 800mg/day of Chondroitin Sulphate resulted in a reduction in pain and improvement in function compared with a placebo in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. Interestingly the improvement in pain and function was equivalent to the improvement patients experienced by taking the medication Celebrex. Chondroitin Sulphate is an ‘over the counter’ supplement that is widely available. For many patients there is a lengthy period of time between the development of painful symptoms and eligibility for joint replacement surgery. Chondroitin Sulphate combined with weight loss and Physiotherapy is an excellent way to manage osteoarthritis of the knee.
How effective is mechanical traction on patients who suffer from low back pain with leg pain?
Journal Orthopaedic Sports Phys Therapy 2016 March
Mechanical lumbar traction is an aggressively marketed and often very expensive treatment for low back pain. A study involving 120 low back pain patients with associated leg pain (sciatica) and evidence of nerve root compression (pinched nerve) has shown that there is no benefit to mechanical lumbar traction. This shows that an active physiotherapy program including exercises and manual therapy is the best approach to dealing with low back and leg pain.
Osteoarthritis of the knee joint seems to enjoy a significant reduction of pain when using an unloader knee brace.
American Journal of Orthopaedics 2016 (July – Aug)
A recent study published in the American Journal of Orthopedics showed that patients with Osteoarthritis of the knee (effecting the medial compartment of the knee) had much less pain when using a custom unloader knee brace. Patients who used the brace reported less pain, greater function and a higher level of activity than those who did not use a brace. Osteoarthritis of the knee is a widespread problem so it is great to know that we can help patients stay healthy, pain free and active by making them a custom brace!
Treatment for hip osteoarthritis. An immediate reduction of pain and improvement of function was noted when hip mobilization with movement treatments were applied.
A recent study in the Journal Manual Therapy (April 2016) has demonstrated the benefits of manual therapy or hands on Physiotherapy in the treatment of Osteoarthritis of the hip. 40 Patients were split into manual therapy and placebo treatment groups. Those that received manual therapy demonstrated reduced pain, better hip flexion and internal rotation rnage of motion and most importantly the patients physical function improved across multiple measurements.
Often patients are told that there is nothing that they can do about their hip arthritis. Meanwhile Physiotherapists have known for years that their patients are getting great results with skillfully applied manual therapy. This study clearly shows that when it comes to hip osteoarthritis, you need an expert Physiotherapist with manual therapy skills on your team. At Cornerstone Physiotherapy all of our Physiotherapists have extensive training in manual therapy.
Less Achilles tendon elongation and better clinical results following early mobilization
American Journal of Sport Medicine 2007 Jan
This study demonstrated that patients who undergo Achilles tendon repair and have early mobilization (rehab) vs the standard immobilization cast have less tendon elongation and better clinical outcomes. This speaks to a common thread in much of the current research showing that early post-operative rehab leads to better in results in most cases.
