What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is the healthcare profession that promotes wellness, mobility, and independent function. Physiotherapy is also the title of the service that registered physiotherapists deliver in helping patients achieve these goals. To find out more click HERE.

Will physiotherapy be able to treat my problem?

We know that you may initially be unsure whether physiotherapy or our other services will be able to help you. We invite you to contact our knowledgeable administrative team who can help answer all of your questions. And if the don’t have the answers, they will connect with an experienced physiotherapist to ensure that you feel confident about our services.

We pride ourselves on helping patients who have been unable to find a solution elsewhere. We welcome the opportunity to properly assess your condition to determine the best way to help you get better.

Does insurance cover it?

If you have extended health benefits or have been injured as a result of an automobile accident, then you will likely have your treatment paid for. If you are using extended health benefits, check the details of your coverage in your Extended Health Manual, or speak with your Human Resources department. For your convenience, we can now bill directly to most insurance companies. We now also accept patients through the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) and the Veteran’s Affairs Health Program.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

No referral is necessary to participate in physiotherapy treatment. However, patients are advised to check the details of their extended health benefits as some plans may require a physician’s referral in order to get treatment costs reimbursed.

How long does a treatment session take and how many appointments do I need?

New physiotherapy patients have 1-hour assessments and follow up treatments are 30-minutes. All appointment times are one-on-one with your physiotherapist. Please note that a small portion of your appointment time will be spent on treatment planning and documentation.

The number of sessions you’ll need depends on your condition. All of our patients are individually evaluated. Your initial visit gives your therapist the information they need to assess your problem, determine a prognosis, and create a treatment plan. Your therapist will discuss this with you at your initial assessment.

What happens at my appointment?

At your initial visit, your physiotherapist will conduct an interview and a thorough physical evaluation. This will be directly followed by treatment so you can immediately benefit from your experience.

Treatment itself can vary depending on the condition that you are presenting with. This may involve education on your injury and how to optimize recovery, manual therapy (hands on treatment), modalities (e.g. ultrasound treatment, acupuncture), and an exercise program.

What do I need to bring with me? How should I dress?

We ask our patients to wear clothing appropriate to the type and area of injury. Shorts and a t-shirt or tank top is usually sufficient.

Bring any test reports or other medical documentation that is relevant to your condition to your appointment. Please also bring your extended health benefits card as we may be able to directly bill your insurer for your visit.

If your condition is related to an auto accident, we require your case manager’s name and contact information, your claim number, and extended health benefits information.

If you feel your problem is related to any accessories, you may wish to bring those with you. Our physiotherapists sometimes find it useful to analyze specific footwear, backpacks/bags, photos of your work station, etc…

We ask that you please arrive 15 minutes early to complete your intake forms.

Do I need to have imaging done before my appointment?

No. Most patients do not require any imaging. We will perform a full examination of your problem and only recommend imaging if it is required. If you already have imaging, bring the results with you to your first appointment.

How quickly can I be seen for my first appointment?

We have a large staff of physiotherapists and we can accommodate most patients within 48 hours.

Why Cornerstone For Physiotherapy?
  • Highly educated, experienced and reputable clinicians. Our physiotherapists have a passion for physiotherapy and constantly engage in continuing education to ensure we use the latest techniques. Our physiotherapists are also involved in assisting within the University of Toronto and University of Western Ontario’s Schools of Physical Therapy as well as instructing and mentoring with the orthopaedic division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.
  • Every moment of your treatment time will be with a registered physiotherapist. We don’t employ assistants or kinesiologists.
  • Highly respected in the local medical community. We are proud to be the “clinic of choice” for a great deal of medical professionals who confidently refer their patients to us. In fact many physicians, specialists, surgeons, and other physiotherapists in Toronto come to Cornerstone as patients themselves.
  • For us, “patient-first” is not simply a marketing term, but the foundation behind the design of every aspect of our company. Everything from our clinical environment, our staff, and our policies and procedures have your experience as our first priority. In fact, if your expectations are not met, we want to know, so we can do everything we can to correct it.

Do you have registered physiotherapists?

Yes! All of Cornerstone’s physiotherapists are registered and in good standing with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario. You can verify the status of any physiotherapist here: https://portal.collegept.org/public-register/
