Lymphedema is swelling caused by fluid buildup when the lymphatic system can’t properly drain fluid. After breast reconstruction, especially if lymph nodes are removed or radiation is involved, there’s a lifelong risk of developing lymphedema.

Our goal is to start physiotherapy early, even before swelling develops, to protect and optimize your lymphatic system. Early treatment helps reduce scar tissue and muscle tightness that can block fluid flow, improves joint mobility, and supports overall lymphatic function.

Why early treatment is important:

  • The lymphatic system’s ability to move fluid is highest before surgery. After surgery and radiation, this capacity drops and can decrease further as scar tissue and fibrosis develop.
  • Starting treatment in the first 2 weeks to 2 months after surgery (the proliferation healing phase) helps prevent progressive swelling.
  • Waiting until symptoms means the system is already functioning suboptimally and makes getting it under control harder.

Preventing lymphedema starts with prehabilitation, where we:

  • Provide education on avoiding protective postures that increase swelling
  • Teach you how to pace activities (these recommendations will be individualized) to avoid overloading the lymphatic system
  • Teach you to recognize early warning signs such as heaviness, achiness, fatigue, numbness, or tingling in the affected limb

Keys to successful treatment include:

  • Timing therapy early in healing (ideal, but never too late to start)
  • Supporting joint and muscle function for optimal lymphatic flow
  • Using manual lymphatic drainage and scar tissue mobilization
  • Engaging patients to keep activity levels manageable and maintain home exercises

By working together early, physiotherapy can help you reduce your risk of lymphedema, support healing, and improve your quality of life after breast reconstruction.
